A few months ago, I ordered a blue ukulele, an impulse purchase, if there ever was one. In my mind, as soon as the instrument arrived, I would be singing and playing Israel Kamakawiwo's Somewhere Over the Rainbow, but after I eagerly ripped open the package, I could barely tune the thing. Damian, however, strumming and humming, carried the ukulele everywhere. (I was jealous of his mad skills). One of our neighbors even stopped him to say, "Hey! Nice ukulele!" as if he was complimenting Damian on something as ordinary as a new haircut. Then we carried the little blue uke on a weekend trip to Arkansas, and if nothing else, it served as a conversation starter.
These days, I'm slowly learning a few chords and how to tune, but normally when I try to play a song, I soon become irritated and lay the ukulele down in exchange for the guitar, more familiar territory. (I've never been known for my patience, and I have a long history of dabbling, particularly when it comes to music).
Last night, Damian and I hosted a movie night and after the movie (probably due to the conspicuous presence of the blue ukulele on the bookshelf) the conversation steered toward musical instruments. We began to realize a lot of people we know are closet musicians, so finally, Damian asked each person, one by one, what instrument he or she played.
"Well, actually, I teach piano..."
"You teach piano?!"
"Oh, and I play the clarinet."
"The clarinet! You don't say!"
It was hilarious, because we all felt like we were confessing. So, here's my confession: I played the violin throughout junior high and high school. I also played the saxophone in the sixth grade--I had braces and giant glasses and was a classic band nerd. I wish I had a picture to share. :)
So, I ask you, Gentle Reader, to confess: do you play any musical instruments?
Musical instruments, huh? Uh, I picked up a ukelele for a couple weeks. But, same as you, put it back for the guitar. So... guitar, piano, and clarinet.
ReplyDeleteI do. I play the oboe (all through jr. high and high school through til now) and I can play a little sax and drums.
ReplyDeleteclarinet. and a bit of piano. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're too funny, I love that you would buy a ukulele as an impulse purchase :) I used to play the piano, but haven't had one to play since I got married. I'd love to pick it up again, if we ever have room for a piano!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my blog, dearie! I took seven years of piano lessons, and I have an Irish flute, but need lessons desperately as my dog hides every time I try to play a note.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is lovely! I am especially drawn to your ballet posts. As I grew up, dance was all I did in my spare time. I decided to give up pointe in high school since I knew I'd never do it professionally and didn't want to ruin my feet. Now I am longing for dance again, and really aching to try something new--Irish step dance! I've always felt sheepish about going back to dance as an adult, but reading your posts has truly inspired me to go sign up for classes, so---THANK YOU!!!! :)
Oh my goodness, your comment makes me so happy! I am always, always trying to inspire other grown ups to take dance classes. I'm actually learning an Irish type of dance right now. It's really fast and makes my head spin, but I love it!
DeleteI played ukulele when I was younger! And wow, this pretty mint one & your funny story makes me want to take it up again!

I played the piano for years and loved it! I don't have much time to play it these days and am quite rusty. But I love that it's in my living room and I can plop down and pick out a tune every once in awhile.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the blue ukelele! How cool is that?
ah so cool! I can play piano little bit not much tho
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit btw
Let me know if you wanna follow each other

Thankyou for the comment & stopping by my blog! Loving the colour of that ukulele and I play a little of the piano and gave up after a few months. I had a passion for ballet but my parents tell me to focus on my studies so I guess no ballet for me, you're so lucky to be able to do ballet :-)

I was talking about instruments with some of the kids in our youth group last night. They're a talented bunch, a lot of them are very musical, and it reminded me that I played the oboe for three years when I was younger. I was just beginning to play it better (I wasn't exactly a natural) when I had to give it up - I'd love to take it up again, but I'm not sure if I ever will.
ReplyDeleteYour ukulele is such a gorgeous colour :)
I can sort of play the piano. I took lessons for six years, but didn't really like practicing, so finally I stopped. Then I started voice lessons which I liked much more-- does singing count as playing a musical instrument? ;)
ReplyDeleteehhh... no. the only thing i play is "draw something." lame sauce, i know. i really should have stuck with the piano, but instead i started traveling. oh well.....:)
ReplyDeletei played clarinet and should pick it back up. along with guitar and piano, those are beautiful instruments
ReplyDeleteI played the piano for 8 years through junior high and high school, and I had huge glasses and braces too!! Haven't touched the piano in a long time, but I'm tempted to start playing again. Great post - and thanks for stopping by my blog :)

I love the colour of that uke! My boyfriend's mum is a ukulele collector and I would love to get her one. How much should a decent one cost? The ones on amazon that you linked to are all different.
ReplyDeleteI can't find the exact ukulele I ordered from Amazon, but it's similiar to this one.
DeleteI really don't know much about ukuleles--I ordered the least expensive (but cutest) one I could find, since I am just learning. I might make a bigger investment after I've been playing longer, but for the time being, I'm afraid I'm not much help. I hope you find your boyfriend's mom something wonderful, though! :)
No instruments here. : (
ReplyDeleteI can play a teensy bit of piano.
That's it. And not much! Ha.
I'm mostly just commenting to say that I enjoy your writing! : )
Also, I just saw in your post about meeting up with Naomi that you're a Springfield resident!
ReplyDeleteME. TOO.
I hope you'll be at the meet up in June. : )
Hurray for Springfield bloggers!!! :)
DeleteI play guitar and sing... somebody bought me a ukulele 3 years ago though and I've never played a single chord on it!! I keep meaning to learn but just haven't got around to it yet
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute post! And an awesome ukelele.
ReplyDeleteI used to play Piano as a kid, and I own a guitar (my first ever BIG purchase) but I have yet, years later, to learn to play more than a few chords. I played saxophone for a while, and in highschool I was part of our show choir and participated singing in talent shows.
Mind you I'm not particularly good at any of the things listed, but its' fun so whatever!
Sweet blog, really enjoying reading through!

I played the flute from 5th grade up until high school graduation, then briefly with the Catholic group at mass while in college. I can't even remember why I started playing - I just remember all the 5th grade classes being brought into the multipurpose room and given a speech by the band and orchestra teachers before being told to stay if we wanted to join; I stayed. I probably picked the flute because it sounded pretty and looked like a girl's instrument. I do kind of wish there was a way I still played.
ReplyDeleteI also learned how to play the pennywhistle (Irish tin whistle) when I went to an Irish dance camp back in 2004. Didn't play it very often, though, but I do still have it. It's kind of like a recorder.
Hi! Just wanted to say that it's really never too late to start with flute again :) Or start from the beginning, even. These greetings from a flute teacher :)
DeleteI've been playing piano for 17 years. I dabbled in harp when I was in high school, but it's been a while since I played actively. That thing is wildly out of tune. I also can play like...four chords on the guitar. I've been meaning to learn, I've just never gotten around to it.
ReplyDeleteNO!! And I am so jealous of those of you who do!!! My husband doesn't understand the point of having a piano in the home if no one plays it... I try to explain the importance of music in your life, but I fear he is a lost cause.
ReplyDeleteI would love love love to play the ukelele! Do you think I have to learn the guitar first?
Oh, no, I don't think you need to learn guitar first. I think with a ukulele and some good chord charts you could probably teach yourself in no time. If anything, knowing guitar makes learning the uke a bit harder, since you already have guitar chords set in your mind and it can be difficult to start thinking in uke chords.
DeleteUnfortunately, I am unlucky in the musical department. However, Nick (the boyfriend) is beyond gifted and I'm so jealous of his piano skills!
ReplyDeleteI am terrible with instruments, I'm just not musically inclined.
ReplyDeleteCute! Well I use to play the clarinet, but my daughter plays an instrument, she plays the Contra Alto clarinet now...
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you , fun to come across your blog!
This post made me smile :)
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm terrible at music. Like, entirely tone deaf. I'd love to take voice lessons or something one day though to change that, because I'd LOVE to play the piano!

Ukuleles seem to be some sort of a "thing" at the moment :) Some friends have bought them and I've seen them in lots of colors (and shapes) in music shops!
ReplyDeleteMy instrument has been flute since 1988, it turned from hobby into profession. But I like playing piano, too, although not so good at it... :D I sometimes accompany my pupils, but give the challenging pieces to the piano teacher to play. Past winter mom gave me her old piano, so I've kinda decided to start practicing again. Singing is wonderful, if only there was time (and money) for classes.
