As a child, I adored my sisters' eyeglasses and desperately wanted a pair of my own. I thought Cara and Lizzie looked so smart and stylish. One day, when Lizzie left her glasses out, I couldn't resist trying them on, and much to my surprise, the world came into focus. I was astounded by clarity. I told my mom I might need glasses, but she was suspicious I simply wanted to be like my sisters. (To be fair, she was correct).
I then read a Baby-Sitter's Club book about a character who couldn't see the chalkboard at school. She needed glasses. I realized I couldn't see the chalkboard at school, either. Eureka!
I went to the eye doctor and from the chart I read only one line correctly: a capital 'E.' (Yes, I am nearly blind).
I was prescribed and fitted for my first pair of prescription glasses, and on the way home, what did my wandering eyes discover? I could read road signs! I could see far into the distance! I was overwhelmed by a sense of newness.
I have now worn corrective lenses for over fourteen years, and though I mostly wear contacts, on some days, I'd rather not poke myself in the eye as soon as I wake up in the morning.
I was using my glasses from high school until recently, when I noticed the prescription was no longer correct. I felt hazy and grouchy in my glasses, so I finally caved and went to the eye doctor.
(This time, I only knew to say 'E' due to my mad memorization skills.)
After my exam, I tried to choose frames, but nothing at the doctor's office appealed to me. I was obsessed with the trend of big, nerdy glasses and wanted wayfarers, not the tiny ovals of the late 90's.
Fortunately, I soon discovered another trend: ordering glasses online. At first, I thought this concept seemed ridiculous. How could I buy glasses I'd never tried on before or understand my prescription without professional help?
I needn't have worried, though. I ordered the glasses above from GlassesUSA.com and couldn't be happier. This virtual mirror helped me figure out which styles suited me. And how to read a prescription? Only a Google search away. It's 2012, you guys!
Within days, my glasses arrived on my doorstep. Goodbye headaches and dizziness. Hello, 20/20.
Are you a four eyed wonder? If so, would you consider ordering glasses online?

I am totally a 4 eyed wonder! I never wear contacts, always glasses!
ReplyDeleteI m also a 4 eyed wonder. They run in my family, plus I was cross-eyed as a baby so I had to have 3 eye surgeries as a toddler. Got my first pair of glasses in 1st grade - big, round frames with pink, purple, white, and light blue flecks. I actually think that my frames have gotten smaller as my prescription has gotten thicker :P I finally got contacts in high school but still wear my frames on the weekends :)
ReplyDeleteFor my next pair (whenever that will be) I do want wayfarers or just black-rimmed ones. Not too big because according to my mom, they'll swallow my face. If you've ever seen Law & Order SVU, think Alex Cabot's glasses, not Jess from New Girl :) (if you've ever watched that show)
Glasses all the way. I'm actually ordering my first online pair as we speak - the 14 day return policy and the low price convinced me. We'll see how it goes...
ReplyDeleteI buy my contacts online, but I don't know if I could buy my glasses online too.
ReplyDeleteI am REALLY picky when it comes to glasses, and a little bit of a designer snob. I mean, if I am going to be wearing the same thing for a couple of years I want to make sure I have something that I absolutely love.
Ah Hannah! It's so funny you're talking about glasses, because I've just stumbled upon another online glasses boutique (www.warbyparker.com). I haven't bought my pair yet, but they are sending me five different-styled pairs of glasses for me to try out and decide which one I like best. If all goes well, I'm never going back to walk-in stores! :)
ReplyDeleteYour glasses, by the way, look AWESOME!!
Oh yes, I'm pretty much blind without my glasses {or contacts}. Okay, and growing up I wanted - glasses, braces, and crutches. I've had all but the crutches. Why do we always want the things that really aren't that glamorous after all? :) I love your new specs! You look smashing! I've never ordered glasses online, but that's because my glasses are ooooold. Next time around, I probably will!
ReplyDeletei want contacts! i hate wearing my glasses and therefor walk around blind most of the time! hahah
ReplyDeleteAHHHHH this is like literally what happened to me except for the babysitter's book.
ReplyDeletelike, I didn't realize how blind i was until I put on my glasses :D
I ordered mine from Zenni Optics.
You look wonderful! I've always loved my glasses too! They can say so much about a person's personality. :)
ReplyDeleteadorable spectacles!! Love them
ReplyDeleteGlad the glasses worked out for you, they look great too :)
ReplyDeleteI have ordered glasses online but I am always worried the prescription won't be quite right. Good to hear these were spot on!
I've had glasses for 16 or 17 years now (I was in first grade when I got them, in my senior year of college now), and my prescription until recently has gotten worse every year. The prescription's slowly plateauing though, thankfully. I'm already blinder than my parents.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'd order glasses online for the sheer fact that my prescription is so high, and glasses cost me way too much as it is.
